It’s been about a month since the last time I checked in with you guys. Besides battling a really bad cold these past few days, I have to say that I am pleased with my progress. Or should I say the beginning stages of my journey. I’m still at 24 Hour Fitness and things are going swimmingly. And I mean swimmingly.
Because of my knee injury coupled with constant joint pain in both knees I decided to venture back into the water. Talk about jumping in the deep end. Yes, I’ve been swimming a few days each week for at least an hour. Some days more. Not only has it proved less stressful on my aching knees it’s been an amazing body workout. It’s been great for my spirit too. Very calming for a usually anxiety ridden person.
Although I love the water, I hadn’t been in a pool in years. Not actively at least. A few trips to the beach and a dip in the pool at a local spa doesn’t count. I wanted to exorcise some demons. Climb that mountain of fear that had kept me away from doing something I truly loved. Story will come later.
Been out of the pool for a week now thanks to a heady cold and a cough that just won’t go away. I miss it. I miss sitting in the steam room before and after my workout. I miss Henry, the old man, who gives me breathing and stroke tips and calls me kid. I miss watching the other swimmers glide seamlessly through the water. Almost as if they were amphibious by nature. I miss the smell of the chlorine that still lingers in my swimsuit even after I’ve rinsed it out a few times.
Swimming regularly has spilled over into other areas of my life. Although I’d already begun my trek back to eating cleaner, once I’d started swimming again I also begin to research foods that would help to fuel my workouts. With each new discovery of another juice recipe that aids in joint inflammation or my sudden obsession with kale chips, I realize that I am on the right path. Baby steps, yes. But on the right path. I’ll post the kale chips recipe I tried a few weeks ago. Pretty easy to make and they came out tasty too.
Today is Tuesday and some of my flu-like symptoms have begun to subside. Not quite back to feeling 100%. One more day of rest and I will be hitting the pool before the weekend. Will keep you guys posted. Did I mention I lost ten pounds? Have to say there’s something to eating cleaner and finding an activity that you enjoy.
